I have tutored off and on since high school, and have been a substitute teacher for all grades for the last six years. I excel at spelling and grammar, and had a classical education in literature, Latin and Greek. Because of this classical education, I have been able to teach in-depth,and to share the etymology of many English words with students and teachers alike. I graduated from college one year early, having tested out of all my general studies, which freed me to take independent studies classes, such as in Chaucer and Middle English. I engage the student with questions and illustrations. I am big on gentle correction and encouragement. My teaching style is centered around working with an individual wherever they happen to be at. In college, I assisted other students in Drury's writing lab. And, as an editor and journalist, I have extensive skills in dealing with helping reporters to communicate clearly and succinctly. I graduated magna cum laude from Drury University, a private liberal arts college, in 1987, with a major in fine arts (photography and graphic design emphasis) and minor in communications (four years experience on the college newspaper). I also have 21 years of experience as an editor at weekly and daily newspapers in Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma. Working primarily at smaller newspapers, I have an extremely varied background of experiences - from writing "hard" news and features to on-the-job training for new reporters just out of college or new to the profession.

I'm currenty enrolled at OTC using my A+ to get my associates degree before transferring and getting my degree in Secondary Education with an Emphasis on English and Journalism. I took all Honors English classes throughout my junior high and high school years of education. I also have five years of journalism experience, four of those years as an editor for my paper. As far as elementary education goes, I tutored at the kindergarten level and have experience helping students with their homework from my experiences babysitting and watching children during local PTA meetings.
