I love teaching and working with all populations. I am patient and flexible in my teaching styles. I have worked with children and families for the past twenty years in various settings. I have a BS in social science from Longwood University and a Master's of Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University. What works for one student may not work for the other. One-on-one instruction is a great opportunity to find out which learning-teaching style works best for the individual student. I have a great deal of experience training fellow employees and have devised the system of show them once, let them do it once while talking them through it, and then let them do it once without assistance. This system also translates to teaching. The last step is the most important; it forces the student to think for him or herself and instills confidence that the problem is not beyond his or her level of understanding. It is very important to teach students how to figure things out for themselves – probably the most important lesson I learned at UVa. If a child knows how to utilize resources such as the textbook, example problems, and the internet, then he or she will be able to work independently through a tough problem.
