I understand that everyone has different learning styles and different amounts of time to absorb material. I try to teach concepts in a variety of manners to reinforce key points and I try to keep it interesting to the individual. For instance, when I taught marine biology at IUS, each student chose their own, unique organism to study and write a literature review on throughout the semester.
I have been a teaching and laboratory assistant for eight years through my undergraduate and postgraduate studies. I've focused on marine ecology, but I've also helped with field ecology, field biology, and marine biology. I enjoy teaching all age groups. I especially like working with High School students.Initially, they can be quite a challenge to work with, but once they are engaged they are fully immersed in the topic! I like to be creative and interactive! I was a difficult High School student so I can relate to many that get bored with some topics. I really like to use transactional teaching methods. I introduce a subject and have discussions about the material rather than strictly lecturing.I like to learn what the student can teach me after assigned a reading. Have them go in the front of the room and explain a portion of the reading. It also helps them develop confidence in their public speaking.

I returned to college in my mid-40s to complete a Bachelor's degree, majoring in Biology, minoring in Chemistry and Pre-professional Studies. This enabled me to attain competent understanding of not only the hard science classes, but also to experience writing and presentation skills at the professional level. As a current Biology master's student, I continue to hone those skills as well as pass them on to others.
