Never stop pushing yourself to learn

I have taught a large array of children and adults, anywhere from a 2nd grader struggling with reading to adult Burmese refugees. I have the patience and flexibility to successfully work with anyone. I started tutoring when I was around the age of 13. I taught a young Korean girl English, where I would have to create my own lesson plans. While I attended Okemos high school, I partook in volunteering experiences that dealt with tutoring. For two years, I was placed at an elementary school where I would tutor 1st-5th graders biweekly with anything from basic math to practice with reading. I love working with younger people who have a passion for writing. From a young age I enjoyed writing and because I have invested time in learning about and working on my writing, it makes me happy to see a younger generation love it as much as I do. Although my degree is in music education, most of my teaching was done in Christian schools. I have taught math (through Algebra II), English, grammar, history, and science. I would be proficient in any math through Algebra I and any English, grammar or history through grades 12. I have taught grades 3-12.
I have high expectations of students, but I adjust my "teaching style" to the student. For the struggling student, I usually begin at a level that they can easily perform. From that platform, we progress step-by-step until we find the area of difficulty and why it is there. When we master that, we move on. There are a variety of techniques to use, depending on the problem and the student, but the general expectation is that they can do it.

I would also want to obtain a list of goals or expectations from the student's parents in order to implement a plan that will aid both the student and I to accomplish the targeted goal. A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching mainly K-8 on a consistent schedule, I have learned that some students need one-on-one teaching. Being the third teacher in Head Start, I had time to work with individual students. All children were very well prepared for kindergarten. The older children, including High School and Middle School, I would walk around the room and aide them when they were confused. I also had them read the text orally taking turns and we would do the work sheet to prepare for quiz, test or new chapter. I am very patient with those who are truly in need of assistance. A Little Bit About Me...

I would usually look the paper over and point out problems with grammar and spelling and tell the student why they weren't working. I believe in the mantra "show, don't tell" when it comes to teaching. I'm pretty laid back and willing to work at whatever pace the student is comfortable with. I don't move on until I feel both of us are on the same page. I think the history of the English language has a lot of really interesting trivia.
I tutored with the Writing Fellows every Thursday at Schoolcraft College when I was working towards my Associate's in Liberal Arts. I helped students write and edit their papers. The primary focus was English but there were a few Social Studies/History students thrown in there.
