My comments on tutoring Calculus I : Expert at all Calculus I concepts. Very good at breaking down the concepts and making them easy, starting with the difference quotient and how it is related to the derivative, how the derivative is related to the slope of the line tangent to a function at a point, how to find the equation of a line tangent to a function at a point, finding derivatives of all types of functions from the easy to the difficult, practical applications such as revenue, cost, profit, marginal revenue, marginal cost, elasticity of demand, etc., relative and absolute mins and maxes, optimization, related rates, and other concepts.

I am currently employed by a college in Roanoke, Virginia as a tutor of mathematics, chemistry, and computer science and tutor elementary school, middle school, high school, college students, and others professionally. For the last 23 years, it has been so fulfilling working for three colleges and tutoring independently over 2,000 students of all ages in all areas of math and computer science, as well as college writing, adult literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL). I used to hate math, now I love it.

i am pretty relaxed and informal, but I expect students to do the work assigned. I help, but I don't do the work for them. I use Socratic questioning to get students to understand the material. I stress learning concepts and building on them as opposed to memorizing or guessing enough to pass a test.
I received a BS in Horticulture from Va. Polytechnic Institute and State University. majored in Biology (Botany) for 3 years at Virginia Commonwealth Univ. and College of William and Mary. Recently retook Precalculus, Calculus 1, Calculus 2, and Calculus 3 at Virginia Western Community College. Students generally perform better with hands-on practice. I provide multiple opportunities for hands-on and guided practice as time permits. Associate new concepts to familiar ones. Our memories are largely associative in nature. Therefore, providing connections from new concepts back to well established ones increases our retention and recall.
