A Little Bit About Me...

I have been teaching for 12 years. 7 of those years were at a residential treatment center. I dealt with a variety of behavior issues. I learned different teaching styles with each of my students. I enjoy teaching and seeing the light go off with the students. I know many students struggle with their studies and I can help them find their strengths.
I like to see what excites the student then work it into the curriculum.

I believe that students need to be challenged. When they are highly challenged, they really produce. In my tutoring experience, my students' test scores rose two grade levels in ten weeks because they were challenged. Previously, these students were thought to not be able to speak, read, or write English, and were pre-testing at very low grade levels.
For the first three years out of the university, I was a school librarian, and was board certified K-12 by the Washington State Board of Education as a result of this experience. From 2006-2008, I have been tutoring writing at Northern New Mexico College, from 4th grade remedial level through college papers in all subjects. I am presently working in an Upward Bound program for 9th graders, to help increase their study skills.

In teaching I am basically a generalist and humanist. My background is in mathematics and the sciences, but with a solid foundation in the humanities. Practically, I have never stopped learning something new and in addition to my formal credential I have done university course work in languages, forestry, animal husbandry, and sports training. I believe my teaching style is one in which I help students make associations by way of discovery and interconnections. Much of mathematics can describe the natural world and I attempt to make mathematics both interesting and fund by drawing on these associations.
