My comments on tutoring Journalism : I have written articles for newspapers and magazines which have been received very well. Writing journalistically is different from writing other kinds of material, and the student must know the difference. I teach that.

I am gentle, yet demanding. I am soft, but strict. I use humor to keep my students interested and in focus. I teach, but I also listen and watch for signals from my students in order to know if they understand or need more explanation. I develop a bond with my students regardless of the students'age which allows us, as a "team" to move together toward success. I began tutoring my classmates when I was in kindergarten. Throughout elementary and high school, I frequently tutored classmates and students in other grades. I started writing as a journalist at a small daily newspaper. I became interested in broadcast journalism and spent three years writing commercials and promos for a television station. I moved to South Florida after that, and couldn't find a broadcasting job, so I took a position at a marketing company, where I learned to write marketing copy. Four years later, I had an epiphany that I wanted to work helping the poor, and I took a position writing direct mail fundraising materials for a non-profit. About three years later I decided I wanted to help people in Afghanistan, and I accepted a position in the western city of Herat. Essentially it was journalism, and my stories appeared in materials for a non-profit helping the Afghan people. Since 2002, I have been doing this kind of work and traveling to Afghanistan.
