As a long-term adjunct instructor, I have successfully cultivated an effective set of best teaching practices relative to the English language and Communications. I know that all students can learn. The trick to it is to get them to want to. As a teacher, I must be able to improvise, adapt and over come all obstacles that keep students from wanting to learn. The primary obligation of a tutor is to show the pupil that big, intimidating chunks of academic work, whether they be assignments, units, or even entire classes, can be broken down into logical sequences of more manageable parts. To accomplish that, I focus first on my demeanor. When struggling in school, it is easy to panic, and if the tutor is relaxed, calm, and deliberate, then that catches on and the session can proceed in a level-headed manner. Also, I make sure that the sessions are reliably structured. We look first at the syllabus, then at the assignment at hand, and articulate what exactly needs to be accomplished. After that, we lay out a road map and proceed in a step-by-step fashion until the work is done.
