Hello! Hajimemashite! I recently returned (June 2018) from my study abroad at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, or APU! I studied and lived there for about three years. My major was in Asia Studies and Japanese Culture, Society and Media. I was able to get an equivalent of N3 on the JLPT(Japanese Language Proficiency Test). While i'm not natively "fluent”, I was able to live and navigate daily life independently. I was also a TA for multiple classes while I attended my own curriculum. Learning Japanese and about Japanese culture has always been a passion of mine and I hope I can share some tips and tricks I learned to help pick up the language more easily.

After 17 years in the classroom, I still firmly believe that teachers are born and not made, and that all people should develop a love for life-long learning in whatever their career fields or passions may be. My loves do include reading and writing, but with advanced degrees in adult and vocational education and curriculum studies, I also enjoy studying many other areas of learning. My teaching styles vary depending on the student. I had one student who was an adult, moving to Ecuador for 2 years to work. I taught him the basics using methods such as flash cards, workbooks, and homework assignments. We met 3x a week for 3 months. In college I taught a Spanish course for a Christian Highschool near my university. This was rather different since the students were in their early teens. My method with them was 'FUN.' I used pop culture and things that interested them to help them learn. For example: I had them bring in a picture of their favorite celebrity and they had to describe the colors, clothing, and characteristics of that celebrity in Spanish. It was a success.

I am a patient, friendly, and fun individual. Like I tell my own children, I believe that teaching and learning is a two-way street. It's important for teachers to engage students, to help them discover, to guide them in their learning.
