A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is very progressive. I utilize Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences quite a bit. I try my best with individualized testing to identify the students learning style. Then once this is identified, I can teach using the way that the student learns the most effectively. An aha light goes off and they understand the material now with a proud smile. To me, the best part of teaching is when the student starts to understand the material!

My comments on tutoring PSAT : We always administer a mock PSAT to determine where you are and then we teach critical reading skills; math problem-solving skills; writing skills and retest at intervals depending on the students individualized tutoring plan. This is the test to take if your child is going to college. It helps them prepare for the SAT in particular, but is also a helpful tool for doing well on the ACT. It also allows students to enter the competition for scholarships from NMSC (grade 11).

I believe that everyone can learn; that we are all life long learners and that patience and encouragement are key to a successful academic experience for all who seek to improve their skills. I further believe in focusing on the strengths of my students and individualizing materials and activities to meet the needs of the student.

I recently graduated with the highest honors from the University of Florida. I double-majored in economics and international relations with a minor in business administration, giving me both strong analytical and writing skills. I learned to communicate effectively through writing research papers and creating oral presentations. I have also taken math through calculus, English, biology, and chemistry at the college level and feel comfortable tutoring high school students in these areas. I have previous experience giving private English lessons to Brazilians, both in the states and in Brazil. My students ranged from beginners to advanced when I began working with them. I prepared oral and written course work tailored to their skill level, with special attention to typical problem areas for Portuguese speakers.

There are numerous reasons why a parent or guardian may want to hire a tutor. Perhaps their generally successful student is having trouble keeping up in math. Or maybe the child is having trouble focusing and needs someone to help them hone their problem-solving skills. Perhaps the student simply has poor organization or study habits. A successful tutor must be flexible, ready to cope with any circumstance that may arise. I believe that flexibility and patience are the most important traits a tutor can have.
During my time at Rice, I tutored at-risk elementary school students for one year at an after-school day care program (mostly math and reading). A year or so later I began working for a private tutoring company, teaching middle school and high school students math, writing skills, time management skills, social studies, and science. After college I spent about eight months teac ... read more

I have been working in the field of education for over 20 years. As a teacher in New York City and New Jersey, I have learned how to effectively teach children how to express themselves in writing, read for comprehension, and use critical thinking skills while attacking mathematical problems. During the last five years I have been tutoring children with special needs in basic skills and organizational areas. I have also tutored students from preschool to sixth grade in all academic areas.
I believe that in order to effectively reach a child, a teacher must understand children and enjoy being in their company. Throughout my years of teaching, I have found that all children are equipped to learn and succeed. Every child has a unique method of understanding information, and my job is to find what that learning style may be for each student. An effective teacher has a sense of hum ... read more

I have been tutoring for almost 10 years. I tutored through my high school years at Suncoast, where I took a heavy load of IB and AP courses. I also tutored through college at McGill University, where I majored in Marketing. I enjoy tutoring in various subjects such as math, English, literature, and most business classes.
It may sound cliché but I have always loved learning. I enjoy the unique thrill that comes with grasping a new concept or finally discovering the solution to a difficult math problem. When I tutor, I try to pass the excitement I feel along. I believe my best attributes as a tutor are patience and the ability to break complex problems down so they are manageable. I would love to help you or your child gain the confidence that comes from mastering a subject that was previously challenging.
