The goal of my approach is to enable students to have a level of ownership in learning concepts and ideas. Merely teaching the idea is not enough, and that "Oh, I see" moment must occur to embed the idea for long-term growth. I enjoy relating the ideas and facts to real world examples that almost anyone can grasp.
For a period of five years, I offered tutoring services to students at the University of Chapel Hill, Duke University, and North Carolina State University. My ability comes from experience...I was not entirely prepared for college when I started, and had to work much harder to successfully complete my degrees. This is a chance to learn material in an environment that doesn't bear the pressures and stresses of the classroom and achieving a certain grade. Also as opposed to a classroom, I feel that the student should have the floor. This is their time to ask questions and talk through problems. When doing problems, I usually like to ask questions that gradually lead up to the answer and establish the concepts to get to the solution. As in sports coaching, I believe that an academic tutor's main goal is to put the student in a position to be successful. My approach is different for each student based on how they best learn.
