I began tutoring math for Stetson University which ranged from Algebra 1 to Calculus 2. I then began tutoring privately and I have tutored lower level math and advanced statistics. I have tutored a student who was failing calculus in class but then they earned the highest possible grade on the standardized test. I also have a degree in mathematics.
My teaching style involves a lot of examples and having the student answer the questions on the board. I am able to come up with examples off the top of my head and have the student work through the problem to prevent "dumb" mistakes (such as forgetting a minus sign). I am very patient and allow my students as much time as possible and encourage them to ask whenever they are stuck. I try to show that math can be fun and interesting and that there are applications out in the real world.

I like to use the Socratic style of teaching combined with using examples from historical and current events to convey an idea. I like for students to comprehend an idea through their own effort, guided by relevant questions from me. Finally, I want to instill in students a natural love of learning and curiosity about the world that they live in.
I have a diverse background in teaching/tutoring. I have been a high school English teacher and a substitute teacher. Also, I have tutored for agencies as well as independently. The subjects I have tutored include English, composition, mathematics, geometry, and SAT preparation.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a retired Police Officer having worked for the East Orange, New Jersey police Department for 27 years. My assignment at my retirement was detective bureau commander. As a working officer, I enrolled into college and obtained three college degrees and a teaching certification. My degrees and certification are listed with this application.
My teaching style is essentially one of motivation and entertainment. It is my contention that a motivating teacher has to be somewhat of an entertainer to ensure he or she has the undivided attention of students. I have been so successful with this teaching approach that I have been cited by "Who's Who Among America's Teachers" on four occasions for teaching excellence. I am also able to inspire students by telling them of my life's story; one in which I started out in life as a high school drop out and was able t ... read more

During my 13 years in the Navy, I have always excelled in my academics and I welcomed the opportunity to serve as a mentor to my peers as well as subordinates. I have been active in every school that my children have attended and currently work as a tutor occasionally for my sons 8th grade AVID class (math & science) at Galaxy Middle School, Deltona, FL. I have extensive knowledge in many fields that helped me achieve my Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Criminal Justice. I also have volunteered at my local church for 3 years and am active in the childrens ministry, where I serve as a mentor and role model.
When I educate young people, I believe in allowing the class essentially teach themselves and empower them to conduct peer reviews, which does wonders for their self esteem. For adult learners, I have served as a facilitator in many different types of forums and adapted my teach ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I take pride in my ability to be innovative and creative to teach all children the way that they learn. I truly believe that there are 25-different types of intelligence. As educators, it is out job to determine how kids learn and teach them that way; not expect them to conform to a formula or out expectation. All children are unique and are brilliant in their own unique ways.
In my experience through course work and volunteer experience, I have instructed teens in mediation, leadership skills, and assisted them in making healthy choices, created a social skills curriculum, and learned various psychological techniques and skills for assisting people. By utilizing a multi-discipline approach, keeping accurate records of all sessions and interactions with the kids and their families, and communicating necessary information to team members. A Little Bit About Me...

I was the valedictorian of my graduating high school class and one of the top high school math and science students in the nation, but I was not always a stellar student. For instance, I received a “D” in math in the second grade. I attribute my transformation to an "A" student at least partially to my third grade teacher in whose class my math grades improved dramatically and I jumped from the lowest to the highest reading group. She helped boost my confidence, made me feel like I could actually do better, and made me excited about learning. My tutoring reflects my strong belief that achieving some or all of the latter can positively impact students' long-term learning.
I am just as comfortable tutoring students in math and science as in reading and writing. As a secondary school student, I received a number of top science honors, such as first place honors in several state scienc ... read more

From my own experiences as a student I have come to the opinion that the most valuable educational accomplishment one can achieve is to “learn how to learn”. This seems to be a state of mind, an epiphany if you will, which hopefully will be realized at some point in the course of an individual’s intellectual development. Such a state of mind is not usually due to the efforts of a particular instructor, nor is it the result of having taken a certain class. Rather it represents an ideal culmination of the educational process. Maybe, some would say it is the moment when the Scholar is born. Perhaps it is the moment when the true Student emerges. As instructors we may never know if we have ever contributed to such a moment of realization in a person’s life, but it is nice to think we can and it is nice to try, and over all that’s my philosophy of teaching. On a more specific level I have fo ... read more

As an experienced professional in education, I value it's importance. Learning how to read is an essential skill that should be taught in a personal manner. By being certified in Special Education, I've kept myself abreast with current teaching styles and approaches. It's very rewarding to see how a student blossoms and becomes an active learner! I look forward to continue being an active part of that process!
Having been an educator for over 30 years, I love and enjoy the opportunity to work with students individually. The learner is able to adapt well and know that their questions and concerns will be dealt with in a safe and supportive learning envirionment. By being patient, understanding, supportive and encouraging; this will lead to a sense of achievement. Every child has that oppor ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have worked part time as an adjunct instructor since the '70s, including 22 years with the Orlando Program of Florida Southern College, and 11 years with Valencia Community College. The later provided me with dozens of short courses in education. I also completed and retired from a civilian career with the US Army and Navy, starting as an intern, and reaching Senior Executive levels. Very recently I have been tutoring fifth grade and seventh grade students attending Lake Highland in Orlando. Also worked with math students working at Seminole State and Valencia.
Students learn best from doing things. I try not to lecture, but to involve the student in the learning process. I can lecture, but I haven't found it to be as effective as other methods. I very much prefer tutoring to classroom teaching, mostly because I am helping people learn what they want to learn, and so ... read more

Literally all my life I have been asked by students, parents and teachers to help students who were having trouble. I get tremendous fulfillment from watching someone who has been frustrated finally "get it." In addition to teaching music lessons, tutoring all subjects, and homeschooling my own two children, I have worked for the last 17 years with a private school. There I have taught a wide variety of subjects, but they depend on me the most heavily for high school sciences and maths. I am currently a registered substitute teacher, state certified to teach music and high school math, and I am working toward certification in more subjects. Due to my own hunger for education, I am actively pursuing a Masters Degree in Math Education.
When I begin tutoring a new student, my first objective is for us to get to know each other. The student will not be able to receive very much from me ... read more

For three years, I have taught reading and remedial English part time at Valencia Community College. I also have four years' experience tutoring English, reading, and algebra at Valencia and Rollins College. Working in two writing centers, I have helped create grammar exercises for remedial students. I also have done one-on-one tutoring and online writing consultations. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Master of Liberal Studies in Humanities.
As a teacher, I believe in keeping the students engaged by varying activities and engaging different styles of learning (ie using visuals, interactive lecturing, and hands-on activities). When I tutor, I also try to use similar tactics to keep the students engaged in the activity at hand. I believe in being very patient and easy-going, but firm when needed. Students must want to learn, but also I believe a good teacher can help facil ... read more
