What a better way to teach your teen than by a teen?

I graduated high school in late October of 2012. I am not currently in college. I am working twords bettering my future. I enjoy helping others and I find it easy. I used to be tutored and I hated it because the tutors seemed to not care if I got it. I make sure the person or people I am tutoring understand and remember how to do what I am asked to teach them. In high school my teachers used to send me to other classes and tutor kids in the middle of class. I am extremely flexable and can help just about anyone I try to teach. I will not say every because no one is perfect and I'm not going to pretend I am.

Chess is one of my top subjects! I can teach students anywhere from beginner up to those starting serious tournament play.

I prefer to work with students one on one, getting a sense of their skill level, and then engaging with them where they are at to help them work towards their own personal goals.
I have been playing chess for close to seven years, many of those at the tournament level. I was a natural when I started, and have only grown in my concepts of the logic and theory of the game. I am also a published author, and can easily teach any student to understand writing in new ways so that they can improve not only the accuracy but the style of their writing.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love talking to students. I endeavor to let each student know that I care and am willing to go the extra mile to help he, or she, "get it"! I want to "connect". I have a terrific sense of humor, and try to keep my students smiling. I think we learn more, through laughter. I try to keep everyone relaxed. I try to keep everything real. (I've realized that we learn, more easily, when we can apply what we are learning, to our every day lives.) I encourage questions. I want my students to realize that when they are with me, in the classroom, they are safe, i.e., it is OKAY to make mistakes! It's encouraged! How can we learn, if we don't "open up"? I won't give up -- on any student.
I have been writing for 30 years; I have been published over 200 times, in approximately 106 periodicals. In 2008, samples of my earliest writings, as well as recent-front page articles, fro ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

While attaining a BS in Mathematics at Penn State University, I was heavily involved in peer tutoring. For two semesters I spent 10-20 hours per week working one-on-one with students struggling or seeking a higher level of success in courses ranging from pre-algebra to calculus 2. Though I've never tutored a physics student, I've taken several course and am well enabled to tutor in this area as well. Additionally, I acted as a supplemental instructor for calculus 2. In this role I attended lectures to gauge class progression. I met twice a week with its students to ascertain their personal understanding and tailored my lectures and help sessions accordingly.
I believe the first key to learning is enthusiasm. I like to offer real world applications and display my own enthusiasm to instill a positive attitude towards learning in each child. After that foundation is established, I fee ... read more

I have enjoyed each experience I have had with teaching, beginning with an informal position as a study group leader in the Genetics course I completed at Penn State University. While working on my MS at the University of Tennessee, I taught lecture and outdoor laboratory sessions for the Ornithology course, which included about 30 students. As the coordinator of the Conservation Science Internship Program at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, I am responsible for much of the training of 5-11 interns at one time. The Sanctuary hosts interns from all over the world including 26 interns (age range: 17-42) from 24 countries in my time as coordinator. I also teach two 1-credit courses per year as an instructor with Cedar Crest College in Allentown, PA.

It's imperative to listen and understand a students challenges. Reviewing their previous work and giving a current test is a good indicator of the situation. I believe in practice and examples as the clearest path to success. I don't hand deliver answers and I make the process towards answers engaging. I make sure the time and place are conducive to active and non-distractive learning. I relay the importance and relevance of the material. I recap previous lessons and try to integrate them into current assignments. I always value and respect people and expect the same of my students.
I have trained students in a laboratory, restaurant and in the home. I graduated from college with honors and have succeeded in statistics, algebra 2, calculus 1, biology 1, chemistry 1, English literature, professional writing, civics, sketching/painting and classical guitar

A Little Bit About Me...

Any subject can be difficult to master. Each of us brings something different to learning. A tutor may enjoy spectacular success in the short term by applying behavior management principles. I believe that a student’s long- term interests are best served where trust and pleasure in individual differences are established. The teacher’s challenge, as I understand it, is to weave what fires the imagination of the student into the process. Building a birdhouse may, for example, be the portal to the world of geometry. When subject matter is personally meaningful, it is intrinsically interesting and learning is exciting. The inspired student develops lifelong competence.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a motivated teacher who desires to see the goals of the student achieved. Therefore, my teaching style takes the shape of the student, where some students are visual learners, whereas others are auditory or kinesthetic learners. Each style of learning has unique characteristics that enable the student to learn much greater when the learning style is known. By offering the student a survey of questions, I am better able to mold my teaching to their learning style and thus help the student reach their greatest potential for the subject at hand.
I have almost 10 years of experience of teaching students for the SAT,GRE, and specific subjects, combined. It started during my freshman year (1999) at Wheaton College (Wheaton, IL).
