A Little Bit About Me...

I am currently an intervention specialist for students in grades 5-8, specializing in reading content and reading strategies. Last year, I taught students in the fifth grade, focusing in the scholastic areas of mathematics, reading, language arts, science and social studies.I was assisting students in an inclusion setting with some pull out resource room interventions. This past summer, I was excited about the opportunity I have been given to expand my teaching experiences through working with students with learning, behavioral, and emotional disorders. As a mathematics major, I worked in the math lab all four years of my college experience. I would tutor others with their math and help students study for exams. I have also tutored in junior high settings and this past summer I tutored a young girl in 7th grade math. I have also tutored while in high school.
I love math. I find it fun, challenging, and very interesting. When I tutor students, I try to portray my excitement for the subject so they see that it is not intimidating and so they are more willing to work to solve a problem. My hight school math teacher encouraged me by her passion and I have taken that into how I tutor and help others.

I believe teaching is the key to each child's future. When presented with the chance to succeed, I believe each child will. I believe in presenting each child with a verbal and visual explanation of each objective. I then believe that each child needs the chance to complete a task with encouragement and success before independent work. Assessment should only be taken AFTER a child has experienced numerous chances for understanding, practice, and mastery. Flexibility is another thing that many students are not allowed in class, and I believe is very important to success. This is permitted in my classes on an as-needed basis. Each child achieves mastery at a different rate, and regardless of the rate, each child deserves the chance to reach that proficiency.

Teaching is very subjective. Each individual learns according to his/her own style. What I find challenging and rewarding is to find that point where it “clicks”. I believe the best way to learn is through experience and discovery. As an example, I can describe the intelligence of an octopus. But until you actually see a video of one opening a jar for a treat, do you truly realize it as a thinking, planning being. I feel that teaching an individual how to use available resources is just as important as the actual subject. Enabling a student to go out and discover the wonders around him/her through research and education is a wonderful thing indeed.
