I typically begin with the homework assigned by the students teacher, as theses are most often the questions that appear on the tests. Reviewing the practice tests, if available, is also key, as many teachers use only slightly modified versions for the real test. For more advanced students, or those wishing to earn the highest marks, I will design extra problems, both conceptual and mathematic based, to continue to challenge them. This can include something a simple as more problems to work on, or as complex as having the student re-write previous problems to give them a chance to see all the different angles that the concept can be tested.

I have always picked things up quickly, more quickly than my peers. My peers have often come to me to ask for my help in those areas. I also see how to apply what I have learned to original problems because I see connections and hold a deeper understanding of the material. My double major in Chemistry and Biochemistry with a mino in Mathematics was full of its fair share of difficult material, and I was almost always able to help my peers, as well as younger students, through their problems.
I can usually find a way to relate the material that the student is struggling with to something else that they understand. When they can make connections to more familiar things, then they can think themselves through problems more effectively. My previous tutoring experiences have allowed me to gain valuable insight into the academic tutoring process. My tutoring style includes taking a proactive approach towards assessing the student using a learning style inventory, a study skills inventory, as well as determining their current knowledge base of the particular subject. I will model appropriate learning behavior, addressing the subject matter in a format that is most conducive to the students' learning style, in hopes of effectively reducing the level of their anxiety.
