For a period of five years, I offered tutoring services to students at the University of Chapel Hill, Duke University, and North Carolina State University. My ability comes from experience...I was not entirely prepared for college when I started, and had to work much harder to successfully complete my degrees. I believe that this has given me a great insight into what students really need, especially as schools continue to do a less than perfect job of preparing students for the future.
The goal of my approach is to enable students to have a level of ownership in learning concepts and ideas. Merely teaching the idea is not enough, and that "Oh, I see" moment must occur to embed the idea for long-term growth. I tailor my teaching style to the student. I first evaluate where the student is by building rapport, discussing the problem he/she is having, talking to the teacher, and talking to the parents. I then begin focusing on the area where the student is having difficulties. It may be that the student requires help with homework as well as review of fundamentals. I address both areas, always encouraging the student.
I have taught as a tutor in High School, and college. I also taught in the adult education system of Fairborn, Ohio. I have acted as a group home monitor for MR/DD adults. I am presently tutoring a young adult in cost control and algebra.

I attended National University and earned a teaching certificate. I worked in a junior college in San Diego as a tutor in math, English, reading, and social studies. I went on to work in the San Diego Unified School district as a teacher's aide and as a substitute teacher. I then accepted a position at the world famous Scripps Research Institute. Since English was not the first language of many of these scientists, it was necessary for me to help edit their papers prior to submission using extensive grammatical skills.
