I'm patient and listen to the student to see what they get and don't get about the premise of the lesson. Then we get to it. Careful reinforcement of the Correct method will ensure Remembrance and Results. Also, Lessons must be approached within the context of the Big Picture. Students need to realize that there are no pointless or forgettable sections. Basically, communication is key followed by practice, reinforcement, more practice. Learning can be at pace, but laziness and whining will not be tolerated.
I have a Bachelor of Art in History, predominantly American. I also pursued Engineering for my first year and plan to go back to College. Informal for large groups as I wanted the students to see me as like them, but with enough capability to inspire them to listen. I learned early on you cannot make anybody learn anything. You must inspire them to want to learn. At the 1-on-1 setting (tutoring level), I work at a very detailed level with the particular student I have with me at the time. Instead of just giving the students the answers, I will show them where to find the answers. My approach is to guide the student through a problem or two to allow them to see the steps as clearly as possible. I ask leading questions if the student seems to be struggling with the process so they can tell me what they think they need to do next. This enables them to solve that type of problem more easily because they are figuring it out on their own rather than having me just tell them the steps.
