I begin by assessing the student's abilities, determining both their strengths and weaknesses. I make sure to have a solid understanding of what the student wants to gain/learn from the tutoring session. After the initial assessment, I focus on relevant problems, and explain my thought process in detail. I have the student work their own problems and approach each problem with the method I have taught them. I believe it is easier to grasp complex/technical math and science problems when you provide real life applications, so I also work to introduce these scenarios during the tutoring session.

I have volunteered at an elementary school tutoring while I was in high school. I have also tutored individuals in college level material on a private basis for compensation. My primary strength is mathematics although I am quite skilled in English as well.
I have always possessed a love of helping others to learn. It brings me great joy to witness when an individual grasps a concept which they have been having difficulty with. I tend to use a demonstrator style of teaching by first working through a problem slowly while asking the student questions to ensure that they understand what I am doing. It is very important to assess what the student already knows and the level of understanding they hold at the beginning. It is also important to make sure that what they know is correct and that they are not confused or misunderstanding the material. After which, getting to know the individual style of learning for each student will insure that time is used efficiently and that the student is understanding and retaining the material being taught. Working one-on-one is the best teaching method; however, when that is not possible, working in small groups is also very effective.
