Never stop pushing yourself to learn

I have taught a large array of children and adults, anywhere from a 2nd grader struggling with reading to adult Burmese refugees. I have the patience and flexibility to successfully work with anyone. I started tutoring when I was around the age of 13. I taught a young Korean girl English, where I would have to create my own lesson plans. While I attended Okemos high school, I partook in volunteering experiences that dealt with tutoring. For two years, I was placed at an elementary school where I would tutor 1st-5th graders biweekly with anything from basic math to practice with reading. I built strong connections with the children, which I could use to better their learning. At Michigan State University, I spent a semester tutoring at the Boys and Girls club of Lansing. I helped in any kind of homework the children had, and was flexible in helping the supervisor with any other needs that ... read more

I truly believe that as an educator you must establish a connection with your students. This not only builds a great relationship, but also helps to develop a real understanding of your students and develop the best way to teach them through differentiation and accomodations. I have learned over the years that you can't teach all students in the same way, and I have become very good at altering my teaching style to best fit the needs of my students.
I have had many experiences in education both during and after my college education. I have been put into many situations that have required using much of the curriculum content, classroom management, and lesson plan developing skills that I have acquired. I have a major in science, but I also have extensive mathematical skills due to the many math classes I have taken for my BS and while currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Acco ... read more

Although I have usually worked in small groups of 8 to 24 people, the training was usually one-on-one in order to deal with individual difficulties in understanding the material. Each person had his or her own specific needs that had to be fulfilled to successfully understand the material.
I worked as Scoring director for math and science at Pearson. This position involved training adult professional scorers to score elementary through high school open-ended student responses. This required teaching the math behind the scoring requirements first. As how the student answers were obtained was as important as the correct answers, it was necessary to also train the scorers how to evaluate the students' work.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink,” but if it won’t drink, try putting salt in its oats. Everyone can learn, but to do any significant amount of learning they need to choose to do so. As an educator I can work with students to try and make the material such that they desire to learn about it. I find this easiest to do in a small group tutoring session, because you can see how the students are thinking and can cater towards how they learn best. In a large group it is a little harder to personalize a lesson or a project, but to a degree the class can be read and its particular struggles addressed. Learning requires work, and good teachers can motivate students to want to work for their education, and make that work manageable for them.

I have always been very interested in education and the pursuit of knowledge. I remember, at an early age, being the only child I knew who actually wanted to go to class every day. This thirst inspired me to excel in all of my courses, and to enroll in a prestigious university where I studied English Literature and Philosophy. While there, I took an interest in writing, both in process and result. I spent three years working as a University Writing Tutor. During that time, I honed both my grammatical and tutoring skills. I also worked as an editor at a prominent university magazine, which allowed me to interact with and advise many burgeoning writers. As a philosophy major, I worked extensively with younger students sharpening arguments and researching projects. Additionally, I spent several semesters volunteering at a local after-school daycare and tutoring service for elementary ... read more
