Down to Earth tutor more worried about the academics than $

A Little Bit About Me...

I prefer to begin by having the student describe the current subject matter to the best of his/her abilities to determine a starting point. I have found that having the student talk through the subject matter can be useful in determining his/her strengths and level of understanding. I like to have the student work through some problems they have not been assigned from their book/notes so that they are able to practice and work through some other problems before attempting any assignments. I have also found that it is useful to go over any previous quizzes or tests related to the current subject matter as difficulties are sometimes related to previous work because with these subjects the work tends to build upon itself.
I have been selected as a peer tutor through Carlow University for Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.

I enjoy working with children and young adults. I attempt to find the methods/means by which the student learns best. My initial objective is to ascertain the student’s learning goals. Then I familiarize myself with the material with which the student is currently working, so as to develop a successful learning approach. This is an ongoing process as the student progresses. The experience of teaching students, though complicated at times, was extremely rewarding. I felt a sense of joy when my students understood a concept here and there. I soon realized I was slowly becoming a role model to younger students that were interested in studying chemistry. My experiences as a graduate student and teaching assistant enhanced my curiosity and desire to help young scholars achieve their dreams. One of my main goals of teaching is to promote active learning which will be approach using real case studies, minute paper and concept maps to review previous student’s knowledge and draw a parallel of the concepts discussed in the lecture.
