My comments on tutoring Elementary Vocabulary : I always include vocabulary skills and development in any subject I tutor in the language arts areas (English, grammar, writing, reading, etc.)

I am a retired elementary school teacher and taught for over 15 years in the St. Louis area public/private schools. My comments on tutoring Elementary Vocabulary : This is arguable one of my just innate natural talents is my ability to comphrehend vocabulary, determine how and where it best fits in writing and conversation, and most importantly how to effectively reach my student working on this to a point where they feel confident and have a very solid comphrehension of words.

Learning can be hard. Memorization can be hard. Knowing how to determine the proper equation to use in a chemistry or math equation can be hard. What I focus on with my students is not simply telling them the information and how they should go about finding the right answer but, more importantly, why the answer they are choosing is correct. What that does is to force them to learn the actual skill and when to use a given equation or what a sign or symbol indicates in terms of the type of problem they are trying to solve. By doing this, I find, the student is able to get to the core of not simply stuffing equations, grammar terms, or scientific terminology in their heads and then unloading them on the test. My comments on tutoring Elementary Vocabulary : Learning new words and how to develop the ability to gain vocabulary is essential to learning. I teach students how to do this.

I have worked with children and teens all my life. I was a camp counselor at a YMCA camp for 6 summers in my teens and early 20s. I taught 5th grade my first year (class of 36 students!) and then taught 3rd grade for a year, 2nd grade for three years, and 4th grade for three years--all in public schools. Then I taught English at the middle school level for four years in a private school. After that I subbed and tutored for a year until I was hired to teach in a K-8 building at the 8th grade level. I taught there for nearly 20 years before I retired, teaching science, pre-algebra, and communication arts (English, reading, vocabulary, writing, grammar, and spelling.) While in that position, I was the sponsor of the science fair, building-wide, for nearly ten years. Since retirement, I have subbed, tutored, have written and published a book, and am writing a daily blog.

Finding learning solutions one learner at a time!

I believe each student has an optimum learning style and I try to match my teaching strategies to that style. When working with adults, I try to establish motivations for learning first and then move on to the next step - how best to master the infomration or skill.
