I find that demonstration though example is the first step to understanding. This allows for an initial exposure to the material and plants seeds of knowledge. Adjuvant to demonstration, motivation and enthusiasm to learn the material must be taught. All the homework in the world cannot replace this! Regrettably, students often struggle due to poor instruction or vague textbooks which erode a student’s motivation. Fortunately this can be overcome with a little outside assistance. My long term goal of teaching is to foster a mature understanding of the subject matter. To master a subject it must be learned from multiple angles before the bigger picture is illuminated. I am believer in providing a bottom-up approach to mathematics. I first present a difficult problem to the student to find where their current level of expertise lies. Once I identify potential issues the student is having, I break the difficult problem into smaller problems which are easier to handle. I believe students need to start with easy problems, multiple examples, and heavy guidance. Then, I provide increasingly difficult problems until an abstract concept is obtained without my assistance. I encourage students to teach me concepts themselves, so they can put the problem into their own words by explaining it to me.
