A Little Bit About Me...

I have 31 years of teaching both learning disabled and cognitively disabled children. I have been trained extensively in working with youngsters who are dyslexic and dyscalculic ( math disabilities). In addition I have taught children who were on the spectrum, including those with Aspergers. I am proficient at assessing a child's strengths and weaknesses and developing a learning program which will build upon strengths in order to address underlying weaknesses.
I believe that every child is able to learn and that all have the right to achieve their maximum potential. I am structured in my approach but strive to listen to the child's opinions. In the past, my classroom rules were based upon Jim Fay's Love and Logic; essentially, I will treat you with respect, and feel free to do anything that does not cause a problem for anyone else.

Teaching has been a lifelong practice of mine, whether in a job by choice or in my life by happenstance. I consider myself a natural teacher. I taught Sunday school in high school. I then went on to get a degree in education from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. I taught several years at the preschool level. Since having my son, I have spent many hours volunteering in the public schools. I have experience with assistance in teaching yoga, childcare, and with those who have mental disabilities. I am a student at University of Wisconsin Fox Valley, receiving my Associate Degree of Arts & Science at the end of May 2011. I have been struggling to pay for school to further my education because it's been all on my own. I work two part-time as a florist and own my own cleaning business.
