"Half of knowledge is knowing where to find it."

Once while subbing, I entered a classroom where the students had been allowed to watch Jerry Springer on TV for the last two weeks. I couldn't let this continue, but I saw how emotional the class was about the show. I encouraged them to write their own talk show and told them we would perform it the next day. I find that connecting student's interest with the subject matter to be learned is the best way to teach.
After completing my undergraduate degree in English Literature at Florida State University, I worked as a substitute teacher in Hillsborough County for two years. In 2009, I completed my Master's Degree in Communication at University of South Florida while simultaneously employed at the Department of Special Education. I have been tutoring with Advanced Learners for 1 year and am currently an Adjunct Instructor of Public Speaking at HCC Dale Mabry.

Many children have short attention spans. It's important to keep them engaged. When reading, I challenge their retention skills in a fun way and encourage them to elaborate on the story. This breaks up the task and gives me feedback I need to guage how they are doing. Are retaining the information? Children have different ways of learning. Some are visual, while others are audible. Decide what works best for the child and form a plan that will work for them. If I see they are bored or frustrated, I will take a time out to chat about something they like.
