A Little Bit About Me...

I worked as a peer tutor in the Writing Center at the University of Delaware for 2 years. I worked on all phases of the writing process, from brainstorming to revisions and final drafts. I have also tutored first year college students in the social sciences, in particular in history and government.
As far as writing, the best approach depends on the phases. I have always acted as an instructor and guide. I help a student develop and process ideas. In the brainstorming phase, I may help a student generate ideas by suggesting different areas and working on "thought clouds." We may also do a "free write" and then discuss the ideas that were generated. During the writing process I help guide students in the development of outlines and structure. Truthfully, there is no best strategy. The techniques depend on the students needs and learning styles.

Writing is one of my top subjects! Writing is my passion. I love telling stories, sharing my views and making people think about issues they normally wouldn't. My love for writing is what made me major in Communication-Journalism. I don't want to say I am an "expert" in writing because there's always MORE to achieve in writing, always more to discover about your personal writing style.

Every student is different, regardless of gender or age. Their learning style is different, therefore my teaching style has to be designed specifically for their learning level. Some students are audio learners, and some like myself are visual. My teaching philosophy is simple, help students write to the best of their ability, give them the tools to engage in critical thinking, and challenge them to write about what they are interested in. Writing is clearly a skill that crosses majors, and is a critical skill in the workplace. I have taught and/or tutored all the languages I have rated myself as an expert since 1952, and am still doing it presently, concentrating on remedial tutoring.
