In tutoring, it is usually the case that the students can learn most of the subject without a tutor, but that each student who has difficulty has a difficulty not shared by most other students, hence not covered in class or homework. For tutoring, I learn what the students can already do well, what they can do with difficulty, and what they can't do yet, and I learn what is limiting their next progress.
