My comments on tutoring Pre-Algebra : The skills learned in Pre-Algebra are essential to success at the high school level. A solid Pre-Algebra foundation will pay large dividends when you begin taking Algebra I, Algebra II, etc. and I have experience working with students in this situation.

My approach to tutoring is built around my belief that all students can learn. Once a proper foundation is in place, my strategy involves helping students master mathematical concepts one step at a time. What is sometimes taught in the classroom as a "single step" may in reality be several steps all rolled into one. My approach involves taking these "single steps" and breaking them down so each student can fully understand what is required and why. As students better understand the reasons they are doing the things they are doing they will feel successful and that builds confidence. I first try to determine what level of knowledge my "students" had. Then, building on that, I would add layers until the group I was with understood the material. I would check with them frequently to make sure they understood what we just covered and I allowed questions at any time. If necessary, I would back up and try a different approach. My goal was to make sure they understood the material, whatever it took.
While I have no "official" teaching experience, I was frequently required to teach other members of the various teams I was on as well as people from other groups. This involved everything from tutorial presentations to a large and diverse group down to individual tutoring at the table in my office. Most people told me I was pretty good at it.
