I have found that tutoring sessions are most effective when they are fun! Many students find it difficult to stay focused, especially after a full school day. For this reason, I prefer to change tasks frequently and use a variety of fun games to switch up the pace of the session. Learning can be frustrating for many students when a particular subject does not come as naturally or easily as other subjects. Thus, I do my best to incorporate student's interests into reward systems and constantly give the student positive feedback about their progress to help motivate the student. I prefer to parallel the student's own interests with the topic taught in order to best engage their enthusiasm and enhance their understanding of the subject I am teaching. I believe in the value of individualism and the student's unique gifts. However, how one would teach grammar is radically different from how one would teach drawing. With drawing, one teaches the method while encouraging individual creativity, maintaining a right-brained perspective; grammar and literature require a more rigorous approach since they are governed by rules and formulas, maintaing a left-brained standard. I learned the various methodologies used in teaching people and found in my tutoring that finding a way to present even the most difficult material in a manner to make it understandable is greatly satisfying. After graduating in 1978 with a chemical engineering degree, I was recruited by BFGoodrich Chemical Group. I have 13 years experience in manufacturing: capital budgeting and appropriations requests, energy reduction, quality improvements, scheduling and raw material ordering. I also managed the environmental program, assuring compliance with all environmental regulations and reporting.
Both my children were born with developmental delays. I aggressively researched the public law requiring an appropriate education for all and was involved in assuring so. My daughter was mainstreamed before kindergarten and have been extremely successful. My son has also done well with grades although his Asperger's Disorder continues to pose challenges. I was a graduate assistant at YSU for a year during my Masters degree.I taught engineering and mathematics coursework and gave exam papers. I also corrected/checked exam papers. I completed my Masters degree in Mechanical engineering.
