A Little Bit About Me...

As a teacher, I aim to perpetuate knowledge and inspire learning. More specifically, as a biologist I present the material with enthusiasm and point to its relevance in everyday life. Students respond better to learning something that impacts their lives rather than random facts. While teaching general biology, I noticed that several students would come into class assuming that they were unable to learn anything scientific. Students get overwhelmed with scientific jargon and spend too much time trying to memorize facts rather than learning processes. I graduated from MSU in 2001 with a degree in Int'l Relations and Business. In 2007 I returned to school. During that time I took all the pre-reqs for the Accelerated Nursing program, earning a 4.0 in each. The classes included psych, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, bio and chem. I have been tutoring professionally for about 2 years now, but before that I worked with a lot of my friends and family. I struggled with ADD/ADHD while in school, and had to teach myself the skills to become a good student. I wanted to excite others as Chemistry had excited me. I teach the material and why it is so exciting. My style adapts to that specific student’s strengths, weaknesses and interests. I always try and connect their interests to the material, so it is more than just words and starts to be interesting. Chemistry is scary to many people, because they try to memorize, it’s too intricate remember everything. I teach the student to understand why and how substances react or behave. Knowledge of basics, allows the student to solve problems as they are given instead of memorizing specific answers.
