A Little Bit About Me...

Just telling a child how to do a problem is not effective. I believe a teacher needs to explain the logic and reasoning behind solving certain problems certain ways. Knowing this can help the child discover what works specifically to him/her. If a child learns to reason for his/her self, they gain the ability to be lifetime learners. My hope is, that instead of dreading school they gain confidence in their abilities to figure things out, and therefore find joy in learning. Above all it is important to listen to the kids, stay positive, and never show frustration.

While earning a BA in English at Reed College, I gained valuable experience in researching and writing essays on the variety of subjects required for a liberal arts degree. Within my own major, I continually practiced literary interpretation and criticism, argument development, and editing. I believe in identifying the learning style of the student which can take some time with some. Are they a visual learner I draw pictures, maps, charts and video; if an audio learner tapes, lecture, youtube, video, etc,.. and if a kinesthetic learner then they need the hands on experience to develop the learning that is needed, so then standing back to guide the thought process without doing it for them.

I believe that teaching through lecture and hands-on activities is the most effective. A student that is capable of "teaching" the teacher a lesson and explaining the subject in their own words will have a greater understanding of the subject. When I teach and tutor I explain to the student the topic in my words, and then continue to ask for feedback until the student is capable of explaining the lesson in their own words.
While attending law school, I spent 2 full academic years tutoring first year law students. I tutored property and constitutional law. It was through tutoring that I was able to help several students improve their grades, both through emotional support and exceptional knowledge in the subjects.
