Mathematics can be fun,,, REALLY

I have been tutoring friends and family in mathematics for thirty years, and as I enjoy this I started Tutoring. I love mathematics and teaching mathematics. I aim to work with people, by basically a read of the person and then testing them if I need more information. This then gives me the opportunity to relate to them on the many levels an effective teacher has to relate to make the child successful. The idea is to figure out what works on a given student and take their strengths and develop them. This is best done on a case by case basis and focusing in on improvising to cater the lesson to their desires. "If you're not on your toes here, you're not doing it right" is my motto.

I love working with children, as I have coached or tutored school aged children for the last six years. Initially, I like to find out the basics. I want to know their underlying assumptions in any part of academia, whether it's math or science. I have come to find that the very simplest of assumptions can mislead students. I like to start each problem with a new set of assumptions, or a "given", "find", and "solution" step-by-step process. This allows the student to see the problem as a whole and if there are problems, be able to identify where they are beginning whether it's in the initial assumption or in the solution step.

A Little Bit About Me...

Just telling a child how to do a problem is not effective. I believe a teacher needs to explain the logic and reasoning behind solving certain problems certain ways. Knowing this can help the child discover what works specifically to him/her. If a child learns to reason for his/her self, they gain the ability to be lifetime learners. My hope is, that instead of dreading school they gain confidence in their abilities to figure things out, and therefore find joy in learning. Above all it is important to listen to the kids, stay positive, and never show frustration.

From January of 2002 to June 2008 I taught rock climbing classes for Clackamas Community College in Oregon City, Oregon. These were 1 credit PE classes that covered beginning, intermediate and advanced rock climbing. I prepared lessons, gave lectures, supervised student practice and assessed student performance. In addition during the 2003/03 I tutored students in Geology and Mathematics while I attended Clackamas Community College.
My teaching style is easy going and less formal. I know that each student learns best in a unique way. I feel that the most effective teachers try to mold their teaching style to the student rather than the other way around. Also I like to make sure that the student learns how the particular information being taught fits in the larger field of study. I find this greatly enhances retention of information and the ability to use that information.
