I am a doer who has shared his knowledge and experience in a variety of ways. When I worked as a photographer and filmmaker, I taught those subjects at many different institutions, from an after-school program for elementary school kids to NYU Graduate School. For many years now, I have worked as a science writer and editor. I mentor many newly minted Chinese scientists and engineers who work for IBM in Beijing, teaching them both English grammar and the proper form and style for peer-reviewed scientific papers they are writing. They ranged from grade 5 to 8. With Breakthrough I worked one-on-one with students as well as in a classroom setting in which I conducted my own lessons. To avoid mind-numbing repetition, I present the material with a combination of text and pictures, then review the material with ungraded short answer exercises ("active learning – I do and I understand"). Then we summarize. I also connect what the student is learning with previous course content to promote learning by association.
