A Little Bit About Me...

Have tutored peers and younger students starting in high school and continuing throughout my undergraduate. Fundamental understanding is what is most important. Just knowing which equation to use for a certain type of problem will not help a student succeed in future courses. Students should also know that repetition is the best way to master a skill.

My comments on tutoring Pre-Algebra : I taught math to both regular and special ed. students for 10 years up to 8th grade and have taught my own children for the past 17 years, including pre-algebra.

My teaching style is very hands-on, involving pictures, manipulatives, and tactile modalities. I like to use a dry-erase board to demonstrated concepts as well as allow the student to practice. I take them step-by-step through a new concept, giving a lot of verbal positive reinforcement to praise effort as well as achievement.
I received my training from Cedarville University, Wright State University, Plymouth State College and Keene State College. I enjoy tutoring those who are in Middle School or High school. I feel as though they tend to have a higher capacity for sustaining attention. Those are unique ages that can really build a foundation for later education. I believe that one-on-one time is essential in learning. Some people might learn well in a large group, but others learn much better when time is spent on explaing specific details. At Purdue University I took all Engineering degree mathematics courses. In addition, I took five statistical cources, three of them were graduate level. At AlliedSignal, I received a week's training to teach three day courses in Total Quality Leadership to employees. Over the course of one year, I conducted twenty four courses with a partner facilitator. One company I worked for was a supplier to Caterpillar. In the course of mutual problem solving, I was able to be certified as a Green Belt.
My teaching style is to provide several ways to solve a problem. Since learning is done in different ways, one of the solution methods will turn on a light bulb and the student will "get it". I bring additional materials and new ways to remember. Last fall I tutored a fifth grader in mathematics. I provided note cards for him in the various solution formulas.

I began homeschooling my children in 1993. My older son was in 8th grade, my younger son was in 4th grade, my oldest daughter was in Kindergarten, and my twin daughters were 2 years old.
