Most of the students I work with have had such negative experiences with school that they become frustrated. I work to restore their self-esteem and to teach them to recognize what they need to do to learn. I compare my students to cars: some have automatic transmissions and they just get in and drive without much effort; some are like standard transmissions - it's not as easy for them, it's more work to learn how to work a clutch and shift gears, but they can learn to go as far and as well as the "automatic transmission" students. With my education I have had experience researching child development in a hands on manner through the Iowa State's Child Development Lab, which ranges of children from birth to six years old. I love working with children and helping fulfill their potential. I like at children as water that must be directed in the right direction. I will do this my trying to find research validated methods of teaching that teaching to all the learning styles. If the child does not learn the first time I will try again and again until they have got it. As a teacher with dyslexia I felt that I was unable to teach reading to my students. When most high school seniors were registering for classes, they had an easy agenda planned. My intentions were entirely different. I decided to challenge myself the final year and study more science coursework than was needed for me to sufficiently graduate. In addition, I was the kind of friend that was reliable in understanding course concepts, so most of my friends and some other peers were coming to me for help. In college, I continued to pursue my interest in business. Through out college I contributed to my church's youth group by helping in organizing and implementing their projects. When I was in school, I could always understand or figure out what the teacher was trying to get across. Some students, however, didn’t always understand what was being explained. I was the kid who would rephrase the teacher’s remarks and explain it again in a way that the other students could understand. Not all students understand things in the same way. I try to find a way to explain things so the material is more interesting and less frustrating than it is when the teacher explains it.
