Teaching requires empathy for the learner's situation above all other things. This means looking at things from the student's perspective and communicating effectively with the student to determine where help is needed and how to provide it. Learning is most effective when the student is respected and is provided the appropriate means for that individual to discover and absorb the subject matter. For the last three years I instructed K-12 students in environmental science and outdoor recreation programs, as the executive director of a nonprofit educational partnership. This involved designing and presenting lessons in collaboration with public school teachers. I received a Commissioner's Award from the Maine Department of Education in 2007 for my work with at-risk students. I have been educating people since 1987. I began in music education, which I taught successfully for 9 years, and also taught piano lessons. I then worked in special education for 1 year as an educational technician, where I tutored math, reading, and students with severe disabilities. I continued on a transitional certificate teaching elementary grades two and four, and most recently have taught post-secondary medical assisting students at a post secondary institution as well as teaching night courses in adult education in medical terminology and medical transcription. I had great success in all fields among my students. I believe that learning is ongoing throughout life, and that we all differ in our learning styles. I like to present a topic so that it is fun, usually with tactile work using math manipulatives, or flash cards, props, and games that teach conceptual thinking skill

Range

As an undergraduate I worked at the mathematics tutor lab in our department. As a PhD student I both taught and assisted in the teaching of mathematics courses at the university level. Also I have experience with privately tutoring elementary, jr. high and high school students. I help point to the truth, aiding the student in discovery. I try to avoid being overly didactic, and prefer to work by asking questions. The most satisfying thing about teaching is being able to witness and participate in the process of comprehension.
