Experienced high school and middle school math tutor

I have taught high school math for the past 4 years involving Algebra I and Algebra II ( at various levels) and Geometry and Pre-Calculus. I have worked as a tutor for the past 6 years in these subject areas as well. I have also worked with middle school students who were taking basic math or Pre-Algebra courses. I took a course at UNH to learn strategies and techniques involved with tutoring.
When tutoring, I try to meet the students needs by utilizing methods of teaching which take into consideration the student's learning style. I explain concepts using visual representations as well as numerical/algebraic models. I am a very patient teacher who will find various ways of explaining math concepts, until I find one that works for the student. I teach students the "why" behind the process rather than explaining the process of finding a solution by only listing a number of ste ... read more

SAT - Math is one of my top subjects!

I'm a recent graduate from Brown University, with experience tutoring at the middle school, high school, and college levels. Math and Biology are my favorite things to teach--I love the subject matter and I love to see it "click" with students. In math, I received an 800 score on the SAT, and a score of 5 on each the Calculus AB and BC exams. I also tutored algebra as a high school student. I'm currently studying up on everything from Trig to Calculus II so that I can take a Multivariable Calculus class, so the material is fresh! I'm happy to tutor any student at the middle-school or high-school level. Biology was my undergraduate major, and is one of my biggest passions. My last semester in college, I was a Teaching Assistant for the Introductory Ecology class at Brown, leading discussion groups of about 15 students, and meeting with students one-on-one to review material. I believe knowledge and success go hand-in-hand. That’s one of the main reasons I enjoy teaching and tutoring students of all ages. I’m grateful for the people in my life that have taken the time to teach and show me various things. I enjoy doing the same, passing along any knowledge that I’ve gained because information should be shared. I try to structure my teaching style to be a bit informal, so the student feels comfortable learning and asking questions. I also try to structure my teaching around the students learning style so that they can get the most out of the session. Lastly, I try to show any tricks for remembering certain information that either I was taught by my own professors or that I came up with during my own studies.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a teacher, I bring passion for both creativity-based and logic-based subjects. I don't subscribe to the right-brain/left-brain paradigm. I believe students can be strong in both mathematics and writing, and it is my desire to help students realize this, because so few people do. My basic tutoring practice is to let the student do most of the talking. I believe this keeps the student engaged in the subject and demonstrates whether or not he or she really understands. I believe that language facilitates thought, that being able to explain something in words helps us to understand concepts better. I often have the student teach me back, meaning that I have the student explain a concept in his or her own words. I believe this helps the student solidify his or her understanding and to identify and fill in any gaps in comprehension.
For over three years I worked as a writing t ... read more

I have a BA in Microbiology and an MA in Zoology. I have 7-8 years experience teaching biology, ecology, microbiology and environmental science at the college level. In addition I have many years experience in software engineering, technical writing, software quality assurance, and technical editing.
In the classroom I rely on traditional lecture, supplemented by Powerpoint presentations, animations, and lists and diagrams on the white board. I usually assign a research paper. In the last few semesters I've implemented through Blackboard some online testing, as well as tutorial "homework" quizzes, where the students get feedback directing them to coverage of particular sections of the text. I always try to make students aware of how the detailed, technical concepts of the moment fit into the "big picture," making references both to material previously covered and to material y ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

The temptation as instructor is to simply restructure the way in which a student learns in order to fit your view, and those I have helped encourage such behavior. Guidance, suggestions, and allusions as to how a student can improve and understand is a better alternative. Simply doing the work for the student has little value in regards to education. A fine balance must be struck between open ended comments of little use and high jacking creativity through re-working large portions of work. My policy is to make the student aware of their shortcomings, explain my reasoning, and use enigmatic reserve in telling them how to correct errors. Unless the mistake is simple, I hold back on literally telling them what to do. .
As an undergraduate, my focus for studies in English were both Critical Literary Analysis and Creative Writing. Analytical writing was stressed heavily, giving me ... read more
