My comments on tutoring Literature : 22 years teaching experience at the high school, college, and graduate levels.

I taught high school and college students for twenty-two years. Many of these students have become successful lawyers, engineers, teachers, professors, and business people. I know how to help you learn, and I know how to make your learning enjoyable. If you'll do what I show you, you'll move to the next level and have fun doing it.

Helping students learn and learn how to grow

I like students to be comfortable, enjoy their experiences with me as much as possible, and learn not only the material they need to study, but also habits and practices that will help them with future studies.
My teaching experience is broad across subjects and age levels. Learning and teaching excite me and I like to think that attitude rubs off on my students. It can be fun to learn, and even those subjects a student does not find enjoyable, can prove satisfying. I've taught middle school and high school, as well as at Bellevue College, Renton technical College, and North Seattle Community College. My own experiences include not just teaching, but also professional broadcasting, journalism (both broadcast and print newswriting, creative writing, editing, and reporting), writing a book, supervising employees as well as students, and poetry awards.

Shakespeare tutor! Let me introduce you to the Bard.

I understand that there are many learning styles and there is no correct or right way to learn. I try to approach a subject from every angle. I have a passion for these subjects. If I have the knowledge and the ability to explain it then I want to. I want to open the doors for someone else to love them too. And if that is not possible then at least for them to understand what they are trying to learn. I have taught students with a variety of learning challenges and special needs.
I graduated from Seattle Pacific University with a B.A. in Theatre. I took the performance track but I also studied the technical side of theatre. I have experience in everything from directing to stage management, playwriting to design, build to running sound and lights. In the performance track I studied character and script analysis, acting techniques, movement, voice, audition techniques, play review, ... read more

I have found that tutoring sessions are most effective when they are fun! Many students find it difficult to stay focused, especially after a full school day. For this reason, I prefer to change tasks frequently and use a variety of fun games to switch up the pace of the session. Learning can be frustrating for many students when a particular subject does not come as naturally or easily as other subjects. Thus, I do my best to incorporate student's interests into reward systems and constantly give the student positive feedback about their progress to help motivate the student. I work hard to get to know the student and tailor tasks and activities to their particular learning style.
I write with great enthusiasm to apply for the position of Tutor. I recently graduated from Gettysburg College Magna Cum Laude earning my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and Neuroscience. I ha ... read more

More About This Tutor...

As a psychology major I was fascinated with how the mind works in all arenas. I learned the various methodologies used in teaching people and found in my tutoring that finding a way to present even the most difficult material in a manner to make it understandable is greatly satisfying. Through tutoring and teaching others I gained a higher comprehension of the material at hand and learned more about both myself and people in general. I firmly believe that there's no such thing as an idea or topic that can not be taught to someone who wants to learn regardless of academic leveling.
For as long as I can remember I have loved to learn. Through college I tutored in psychology, english, the arts, statistical math, and certain classifications of sciences. My favorites were psychology and english because of the freedom you can give due to interpretaional material.

A Little Bit About Me...

Over the last 15 years, I have worked in various different areas. First, I taught adult ESL, and had occasional tutoring gigs with Russian speakers learning English, and some English speakers learning Russian. Currently, I work as a special education teacher. Part of my job is to work in small ratios with honors students who have disabilities. This "study skills" class often requires one-on-one tutoring.
As it has evolved over the years, my teaching style has become a mix of facilitation and direct instruction, with the goal always being the student's making his own discovery. I was trained in the Socratic style, which seems to match well with inquiry-based learning, and that is how my classes usually end up. I introduce activities, then gradually release them to the students to lead.

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy taking what I know about a subject, weighing what my student's learning style is and then tailoring a lesson so that student best understands the material. I welcome the moment when the lesson "clicks" for the student and when subject matter on paper or in a book becomes personal knowledge. To me, the true skill and knowledge of a teacher can only be quantified in how her student apprehends and applies the lesson. There is a world of difference between those who are regarded as experts and those who can take their knowledge and make it available to others. While I do seek to be an expert, I seek even more to help those around me become knowledgeable "peer learners."
While an undergraduate student at a top university, I pushed myself academically. I also focused on trying to help people by teaching resume writing and job interviewing workshops at my university’s Career ... read more

I taught Social Studies for three years at Mt. Rainier High School in Des Moines, WA. We developed a small learning community for 9th grade students. The average reading level in the academy was below sixth grade. The past five years I have been teaching Freshman English and Social Study classes at Coupeville Middle and High School. I have experience working with students who struggle with reading and have extensive training in a writing curriculum. My first love as a teacher was Social Studies, but have always worked at incorporating reading and writing into my social studies classroom.
I enjoy working with students one-on-one or in small groups so I can truly help them with their skills. To me, a key component of education is giving young people the skills they'll need for success after high school. This includes an ability to read and communicate through writing.
