As a freshman forensic chemistry undergraduate student I was tested out of the general chemsirty courses offered at York College. This being the case I needed to find a way to keep chemistry fresh in my mind till the higher level courses were available to me. A professor suggested that I become a lab assistant for the general chemistry classes. This job included preparing all necessary chemicals as well as working closely with the students and faculty. In my final semester as a TA at Maine, I was assigned instructing Chemistry lab to a class that was regarded by some as "difficult" and "slow". The students were largely Forestry majors for whom Chemistry was a required course that had little to do with their major and in which there was little interest. I found that treating them with respect and dignity resulted in more receptiveness on their part. Rather than talking "at" them, I talked "to" them and explained the experiments using analogy with everyday experiences.
