To avoid mind-numbing repetition, I present the material with a combination of text and pictures, then review the material with ungraded short answer exercises ("active learning – I do and I understand"). Then we summarize. I also connect what the student is learning with previous course content to promote learning by association. I use a variety of exercises to reinforce content, including case studies, diagram creation and annotation, group discussion (where a group is available).
