I understand frustration at school because I experienced it myself. I believe a better grasp of communication (reading, writing, speaking skills) can change a student’s confidence about learning (and life) and improve scientific outcomes on class grades and standardized tests. Communication and literacy skills improve when students have concrete know-how (like grammatical structure or organization in writing) and opportunities to use these skills in a supportive (non-judgmental) atmosphere. The best teaching style in my opinion, explains how to research, plan and write essays, gives students time to practice these skills in class, and ensures students get feedback on how well they have done on each sub-skill. Students learn skills by using them in a realistic, subject-specific context, and in a combined way. So they might use other skills taught before such as note taking, highlighting, all in context. The purpose of the skills are stressed, students are taught not just what to do and how, but also why. The students then reflect on how well they used the skills, what gains they were getting and so on, and then they action plan for improvement.
