I take a more hands on approach to teaching as I know that everyone learns in different ways. I believe in language acquisition as compared to simple memorization of words and grammar. I like to bring my own cultural knowledge into instruction as well. I believe anyone can learn Spanish. It is a very useful and relevant skill. I make and plan creative lessons and use methods that are heavily researched. I am understanding, adaptable, and patient. My main concern is that a student is understanding and is engaged with the material. That means if a topic needs to be taught in a different way or reviewed again that is perfectly OK. I follow a mainly constructivist framework in my teaching. This means that meaning is greater than anything else.

The best teaching style in my opinion, explains how to research, plan and write essays, gives students time to practice these skills in class, and ensures students get feedback on how well they have done on each sub-skill. Students learn skills by using them in a realistic, subject-specific context, and in a combined way. So they might use other skills taught before such as note taking, highlighting, all in context. The purpose of the skills are stressed, students are taught not just what to do and how, but also why. The students then reflect on how well they used the skills, what gains they were getting and so on, and then they action plan for improvement.

In addition to academics, my students and I focus a lot on being good citizens, and having open/honest communication. I try to foster an environment that instills respect and understanding. In reading, we do both guided reading and book club units. This allows students to get individual skills, along with discussing full texts with one another. My students are very pationate about their writer's notebooks, and the writer's workshop program we have been focusing on this year (and years past). We have worked hard to master the challenging NYS math curriculum, and have met with success within the classroom.
