A Little Bit About Me...

I taught Nonfiction Writing, Composition and Professional Writing at the University of Pittsburgh for three years. My essays have been published in the New York Times and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, broadcast on National Public Radio, and anthologized in *Operation Homecoming* and in The Best of the New York Times "Modern Love" Column. My undergraduate degrees were in Studio Arts and English, with a minor in Art History and I encourage my students to incorporate multimedia in their work. I also encourage study of historical context for individual narratives and journalism.

I have been selected as a peer tutor through Carlow University for Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.
I prefer to begin by having the student describe the current subject matter to the best of his/her abilities to determine a starting point. I have found that having the student talk through the subject matter can be useful in determining his/her strengths and level of understanding. I like to have the student work through some problems they have not been assigned from their book/notes so that they are able to practice and work through some other problems before attempting any assignments. I have also found that it is useful to go over any previous quizzes or tests related to the current subject matter as difficulties are sometimes related to previous work because with these subjects the work tends to build upon itself.

I have been working with preschool to high school age students since 2004. I began tutoring while in high school, as a junior and senior I would spend 2-3 afternoons a week at the Middle School helping the learning support classes write book reports. While in college at Slippery Rock University, I put up flyers around campus and worked as an independent tutor for five dollars an hour aiding my fellow students finish their final papers at the end of each semester.
