My teaching style relies heavily on feedback from the client. I try to have a phone call with a student to learn what they are having difficulty with but also what their professor might expect from them. Then I get a good sense of their personality to understand the best way to get ideas across to them. There are often roadblocks to learning such as personal hangups or self doubt that must be addressed. Other times it is just a matter of understanding what the person does or does not get.

I do find that most people learn best by diving in and doing it themselves first, while I serve as a "safety net". Whenever I was teaching new helmsmen or junior officers how to steer survey lines, I would direct them how to do it the first few times, and then when they felt ready to try it themselves, I stood back and let them, not stepping in until the absolute last second. I have earned a BS in Computer Science, with a very strong math minor. It would have been a double major, but third-year theoretical math stopped being fun (and computers were still fun). However, math up to and including first year calculus was both straightforward and mostly fun.
