Patience and listening to a child's needs and responses is the key to success. Every child responds to different stimulus to varying degrees, so tutoring methods should be tailored to suit. That said, unless a child is 12 or under, learning is about discipline, rather than fun - so I do expect my older students to meet me halfway in the tutoring endeavor, in order for them to be successful.
My work with kids began during my Bachelor's degree, when I taught math skills to a group of ten-year olds at summer camp.
