As an educator there are a variety of beliefs which I hold that make up my personal philosophy of education and style of teaching. I strongly believe in maximizing a student's potential by having them discover their strengths and weaknesses. As an educator, especially at the elementary and middle school levels, it is important to guide each student as much as possible to help them find their strengths so they can have a successful and positive learning experience. I realize that all students learn differently because of these individual strengths and weaknesses, and it is necessary for me to implement a variety of pedagogy in all content areas.
I feel I am qualified to be a tutor due to my current and previous teaching experiences in elementary and middle school, as well as, the successful completion of hands-on educational courses in History, Math, Language Arts, and Science fr ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

This past September I became a tutor in the Special Needs Department at Masconomet Regional Junior High School. I chose this department and school because I was once a student in the program. Currently, I work with 12 specific students that all have severe add and adhd. Each day we create activities that focus on their weaknesses in math and English. In addition to these two subject areas, I also attend their normally scheduled classes (Science and World Cultures). This way whenever they struggle, they know they can always count on me to assist them with their weakness.
I would define my teaching style as hands on. If I can find a real life example of the material at hand, I will use it. I love to work on whiteboards/ chalkboards with students. This way they are out of their seat and showing me what they know. I am very willing to bend to any style of learning. Playing ga ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love educating people, adults and childern. I am a hand's on teacher and try to make learning as fun as possible, coming up with games and simplified learning techniques. I believe if you make learning fun and interesting any kid can excell. I love the look of understanding and pride on a kid's face when they understand how to solve a problem.
At the University of Massachusetts I exceled in Math and Science classes. I orginally planned on being a Math major but chenged course after taking an Environmental policy class. As a law student, I have been committed to the public interest. I have focused my attenion on environmental issues. During law school, I worked weekends at the Save the Bay Exploration Center teaching childern and adults about marine life. I am a very honest, laid back teacher. I ask a lot of my students, but I do not do so in an intimidating manner. I like to have conversations with my students about things which they don't even realize are related to the topic we are working on. My extensive experience with special needs students has taught me how to get through to students who may not necessarily want to do the work they are being asked to do. I believe this is my strongest asset as a potential tutor in your program. I have worked with students who are eager, yet want to learn, and I have worked with students who want nothing to do with school as well. I believe that all children respond to somebody who is honest and outgoing with them - someone who is willing to give of themselves, rather than simply asking the student to do all of the giving. The greatest compliment I have ever received was when a special education ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Working with children has always been my passion. I feel as though it is important to engage all different types of learners and to make them feel as if the classroom is a place where everyone is safe and included. I have worked extensively in the past with children that have Autism. I believe that all children, despite any disability, are capable of being successful students as long as they are given the right tools and the support that is necessary.
Coming from a family of teachers, the importance of education has always been stressed to me. The emphasis was placed not only on succeeding academically, but also to gain a true understanding of the subject matter. I hold an Associates of Applied Science in Community Service and Leadership and graduated Magna Cum Laude. I also hold a Bachelors of Science in Family Studies with a concentration on early childhood education and graduate ... read more

When I tutored sixth-graders in 2000, I found it to be very rewarding. The students in Lowell came from varying backgrounds with different levels of proficiency in English. I was able to help them improve their reading and writing skills, as well as their mathematical skills. I am a compassionate, patient, caring person, and I feel the students responded well to this demeanor. I strive to make a positive difference in each student's life.
As a liberal arts graduate in 1981 with a BA in sociology, magna cum laude, I was driven to achieve a level of excellence in my academic career. I have always loved school, and I have done well in all areas that I have studied. In 2003, I decided to pursue an associates degree in Veterinary Technology because of my love for animals. However, after giving this field several years of my life, I decided to move on. I would like to work in a f ... read more

I like to take the dry facts and rules of a subject and engage the students -- primarily through Harkness Mehtod discourse -- on the relevance of the subject and text to contemporary life, whether to absorb material or simply for the learning experience of deconstruction. Having the students write accomplished papers -- essay, research or argumentative -- is always a rewarding experience for myself and my students.
I began teaching high school Drama while still in college in 1982, and went on to win four state championships. I began tutoring SAT students and teaching prep classes for the Princeton Review in 1989. I have taught GED prep for Rockingham County Services. In 1992, I began tutoring special needs students and teaching summer school social studies at Portsmouth High School (1992-1997). That year, I returned to college and earned a degree in English. When I was 10 years old, I started helping my grandmother—who is originally from Peru—with her English. As I knew and understood her native language very well, I relied on my ability to translate in order to help her. As this process worked quite well, I have continued to use it with all of my tutoring positions. Although I am not always working with a native Spanish speaker, I try to tailor my teaching style towards the individual learner; I firmly believe that all students learn differently, and that no one way is better than another. As a tutor I strive to be an attentive listener; respectful and never condescending; and actively engage with students.
As a senior at Bowdoin college, I have developed strong writing skills in both the sciences and the humanities; I am double major in both Anthropology and Gender and Women's Studies, with a minor in chemistry. Along with the exten ... read more

I have tutored students with a wide range of abilities and realize that they have different and unique learning styles. As such, I use a wide variety of teaching methods to reach as many students as possible. By the time students are in their 3rd and 4th year, my teaching style is based more on discovery learning. I provide a framework and act as a guide as my students search out solutions for themselves. I try to encourage my students to be critical thinkers and not passive consumers of information. I draw a connection from the material discussed to current events in the news, and place the material in a historical and cultural context so the students have a broader understanding. I often reflect back on the teachers I have had - the ones who made a positive impression - and what I liked about them. They had a sense of humour, presented material in an interesting way, neve ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Being a recent graduate of a university I am able to relate to students and understand the academic setting. I enjoy teaching and am motivated to help students achieve results in the form of grades and understanding. I think each student has their own learning style and finding that is important to the teaching process.
As a recent graduate of a high ranking tech school with my BS in Business Administration and Materials Engineering I am very familiar with the academic setting and learning styles of various students. My areas of study require me to be familiar with high level mathematics and science in addition to an understanding of communication skills in both technical writing, such as lab reports, and business communication techniques. Throughout my academic career I was constantly tutoring my peers and have many years of formal and informal experience as a peer tutor.
