I think that in today's public education system, with ever-growing class sizes some students get thrown to the wayside. These students need a more personalized learning plan that offers them head-to-head or small group discussions. I can relate to the child who remains silent because he doesn't think his question is smart enough. Subsequently, that child starts getting left behind little by little until they feel completely lost and abandoned and become disillusioned with the whole education system. My hope is to convince some of these children that they can make their educations work for them and maybe even become the child in class that begins to want to help others learn and grow.

I received my B.A. in English from Appalachian State University where I also received training in education. Afterward, I became an instructor at Richmond Community College, teaching basic reading and math to adults with learning disabilities as well as a course on PC literacy & business training. In addition to classroom instruction, I've had one-on-one experience tutoring university students in English and Learning Skills.
I strongly believe that the success of education depends on how well it targets a student's learning style and values. Everyone can learn, but individual attention is a vital part of that. We don't all learn the same way or at the same speed, and these differences should be addressed in a positive and creative way to both convey the subject material and strengthen a student's ability to learn in the future.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have Bachelor's Degrees in English & Spanish, a Master's Degree in English, and am rated 'advanced low' on the Arabic Oral Proficiency exam. My Spanish training includes 42 college level credit-hours, as well as a semester studying in Mexico. I have tutored language for native and non-native speakers on high-school and college levels. I also taught the high school curriculum, including Social Studies, Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Physical Science, English and Geography to a class of JobCorps candidates who had been failing students, many with special learning needs, and helped all of them to graduate with diplomas within 5 months.
