My comments on tutoring Shakespeare : 4.0 in Shakespeare Literature class. Paper on Justice in Shakespeare's Italian plays presented during conference in 2008.

I believe in identifying where a student lies on the subject he/she is studying before going further. The advantage of one on one tutoring compared to classroom is that the lesson can be based around where the student’s strengths and weaknesses are rather than a blanket method. I also believe that the skills used in English can be best practiced and analyzed through writing rather than worksheets and tests. Therefore, I believe in having the student write on a variety of subjects and working through these pieces to show where they can improve.

Analytical writing was stressed heavily, giving me the ability to interpret a text based on intrinsic value. The creative tract allowed me to experiment with my own abilities while keeping in mind strategies implemented by others I have read and studied. A requirement for all English majors at the university was to have intermediate skills in a foreign language. I taught Language Arts from grades 7-12 for 27 years. I maintained a classroom,organized my curriculum as well as doing interdisciplinary projects. I retired from active teaching in 1999, but I did a brief period of tutoring with a young child with academic disabilities. When I tutor a student, it is important for me to understand what he or she needs. If the student does not know, I help figure it out. Once we discover what is needed, I encourage the student to look for strategic, organized ways of fulfilling that need. Some students need help reading a text closely to uncover meaning so they can develop an essay with solid evidence, for example.
