As a parent concerned about the condition of the public school system we decided to homeschool our last two children. I began teaching them in the first grade and have continued up to, and including, the present time. My son is now a high school freshman and my daughter is in the eighth grade. During this time I helped start a homeschool cooperative. We wanted to continue homeschooling our children, but we also wanted to provide them with more choices taught by someone experienced, or having an expertise in an area. For a period of five years, I offered tutoring services to students at the University of Chapel Hill, Duke University, and North Carolina State University. My ability comes from experience...I was not entirely prepared for college when I started, and had to work much harder to successfully complete my degrees. I believe that this has given me a great insight into what students really need, especially as schools continue to do a less than perfect job of preparing students for the future.

In my 6 years of teaching experience I’ve come to find out that there is no such thing as a “stupid question.” Each child or adult has a specific way of learning according to their own character. That’s the reason some are faster to learn mathematical concepts while others are faster in literary concepts. I believe in going slow and asking my students to explain what they’ve learned in their own words. If they can do this easily it means they have mastered the concepts. I usually encourage pre-reading before tutoring sessions. A student who has read the chapter ahead will absorb information more easily than one who has not read ahead.
