I am a highly-experienced speaker and tutor of German with 4.5 years of tutoring experience. As a teenager, I attended the annual Statewide German Competition in San Antonio, TX, competing in various fields such as sight-reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation. I scored in the 90th percentile on the National Exam for three consecutive years; in 2011, I received the highest score in the state of Texas. In 2010, I was able to travel to Schwaebisch Hall, Germany, for a six-month study abroad program, where I lived with a German family and attended school to achieve an immersive experience. My students show marked improvement in their abilities with German. I am projected to receive my BA in German in May 2016. I specialize in translation, conversation, and grammar.
Casual and conversational; focused with opportunities to explore the nuances of the language and its usage

My philosophy of teaching has been built upon my personal experience as a student, upon my theoretical education in Second Language Teaching Methodology class, and most importantly upon my teaching experience. For me, successful teaching of a second language implies: • Meaningful learning • Professionalism • Positive atmosphere in the class
I graduated from my Master´s at West Virginia University in May 2010. Spanish Literature is my main area of concentration and Linguistics is my second area of concentration. I am a native speaker of Spanish but I am also fluent in German, English and French. I graduated in May 2008 with my bachelor’s degree in Translation and Interpreting at Universidad de Valladolid, Spain. During this period, I studied abroad for four semesters in France and Germany, and also worked as an English instructor.

Since graduating from college, I have engaged locally in the areas of insurance and financial services, selling and servicing all available products to a growing customer base. This was accomplished by active communication combined with advanced product knowledge dealing with a range of clients from various ages and backgrounds.
After assessing the individual's current knowledge of a particular subject matter, a review of the topic's basic rules would follow. The next procedure would involve passage reading and comprehension followed by implementation by putting "pen to paper". As with all cases of subject matter retention, repetition is the key to memory, closely accompanied by an understanding of the material and need for the application of the writing rules for student advancement.

Making the learning session interactive makes a world of difference in teaching a language, and I find that incorporating play-acting into a learning session excites and motivates the student. Using the list of vocabulary words and rules of grammer the student is currently in the process of learning, I like to create a scenario with the student, stand up and walk away from the table, and pretend that we are actually at the dentist, the grocery store, etc. I also like to use topics that relate to the student's age and environment, thereby make the language 'real' to them.
I tutored fellow students regularly in Spanish, French, and German all 4 years of college, as I studied in Europe and Mexico, and was placed in advanced college levels my first semester in college. In the garment industry I used Spanish daily with subcontractors. In the hospitality industry I was used as a gre ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a BS in business and can tutor in any business related fields. In addition, my original college major was physics. I can and have taught physics, math, (up to differential equations) and physical sciences. I have also been an ameteur astronomer for 40 years and can teach courses in this dicipline. I am currently employed as an airline pilot and have earned all teaching certificates from the FAA.
My approach to teaching is more of a "why" approach. It is more important for students to know why something is or works rather than just how. This approach works well for middle and high school students. It allows students not only to understand the ideas taught but to apply them to other areas as well. I also like to use visual aids as well as conversation. I have found that many of us vary widely in learning styles. Some are visual learners, others are audio learners, and sti ... read more

Teaching art is one of my favorite ways to apply my abilities. I am particularly passionate about comics and giving children the tools to express themselves through art and self-publishing, skills I hope they apply on their own after I am finished teaching them. I believe in giving children the same respect as adults whenever possible. In my experience, developing an authentic rapport with children is more effective than talking down to them.
I have volunteered teaching grade-school age children in theater at Sweetwater Center for the Arts in Sewickley, PA and teaching creative writing to fifth-grade students at the William H. Ray School in Chicago, IL. I have had paid positions teaching a workshop in comics to middle-school students at Sewickley Academy and teaching drawing and basic self-publishing at an after-school program in West Lebanon, NH. My education at CCS has included n ... read more

I have enjoyed tutoring math students who are advanced learners and students who are beginning their study of college-level math. No matter their capability, each student's success is very important to me. I have often met with students outside of tutoring sessions to explain a problem, and had e-mail conversations with several students to ensure they're understanding material. In tutoring sessions, I like making sure each student is actively participating in solving the problem, as opposed to simply giving them the right answer. I also think I'm able to simplify problems so that students aren't just "going through the motions" and are actually understanding how to solve a problem.
From high school to graduate school I have enjoyed being a scholar of many disciplines. In the last year, I took it upon myself to take what I know and teach it to young enthusiastic scholars, and i ... read more
