College Undergrad Looking to Tutor English Students

Not only was English my favorite subject as well as the one I was most proficient in in high school, it eventually became my major in college. I majored in Journalism at The University of New Hampshire, and while I have not yet received my Bachelor's of Arts from the institution I am a mere handful of credits away from earning it (9, to be exact), an accomplishment I am attempting to achieve by transferring credits over from The Community College of Rhode Island. While attending UNH, I wrote for the school's newspaper, The New Hampshire, edited my fellow writer's work, and eventually went on to intern and temporarily work for our local Valley Breeze.
While I have never conducted a formal tutoring session, I have edited the work of my peers and more recently assisted my girlfriend's younger sister with the completion of her college essay. From my experience, I have found that I p ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been teaching and mentoring students ages 8-19 and grades 7-12 in both English and photography for over 15 years. I have taught in public, private, urban and suburban schools both in the United States and abroad.
I love working with students one-on-one, coaching them through their work, helping them find answers, solutions, and ideas independently, without my doing the work for them. As a teacher, my goal is to get my students to the point where they can be confident, experienced writers and thoughtful, perceptive readers. As I have always told my students, since they don’t get to take me to college with them, we need to work together so they become strong, independent learners.

A Little Bit About Me...

When it comes to teaching writing, there are a number of different approaches and techniques, and while each will appeal to different people, all are valid. I believe the most important factors in teaching a student how to write well are practice and praise. I would show, by example in other’s work and especially the student’s own work, what has been done well, and encourage more of it. I’d also encourage the student to explore his or her writing voice and to get comfortable converting thoughts into written words. I am very patient, laid back, and organized, and I believe that everyone has the potential to become a strong, competent, and confident writer. I love teaching because it allows me to share my passion for writing with others.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe anyone (this means you!) can learn to write well and enjoy it. I can help you conquer writer's block, say what's in your heart and mind, make yourself understood ... and get good grades. It can be hard work, but I'll make it fun. Perhaps most important I can explain grammar to you in a way that makes sense so it will stick with you. Once you know why, it's much easier to remember what's right. The great thing about writing is that you often end up amazing yourself with your creativity, insight, and ability. I know you can do it!
For the last 15 years or so, I've worked as a professional writer in the travel industry. I've also published a few newspaper articles. Currently, I am studying for my Master's in Journalism at Harvard University Extension School. My professors there will vouch for my excellent grammar skills. It is my job to facilitate this process while yielding improved academic results through collaboration with students along the way.
